10 x 14'10 Antique Agra / 10x15 vintage rug (#1072)

Regular price $7,600.00

Since the notable period of Mughal/Mogul Empire, one prominent area for outstanding woven rugs is in Agra, India, and their weaving goes back to circa 1500. Agra is also of course known for the Taj Mahal! This stellar, eye-catching rug from circa 1900 is a geometric dream and with its grand size and remarkable aesthetic, it is no doubt a statement piece! Simply put, it's whimsical.

This Agra possesses simple color ways and is in really amazing condition for an antique rug that has so much age. It was woven with vegetable dyed wool, where natural resources (vegetables, fruits, and plants) were acquired to cook the wool with and produce what we see here and cherish a century later. It is low pile throughout and has aged really gracefully. So lovely~! It is no wonder why these woven rugs are so admired.

Diving into more details of this highly stylized rug, you'll notice the calm in the dyes throughout the field, while the borders have a little more boldness to them. Most likely, the borders may have hidden under furniture or just not stepped on (hah), and so the perimeter of the rug has a beautiful, soft touch to it and a bit more wool is evident. You will also notice the borders have a little bit of sheen to it. Like all old rugs, we use clues to help reveal its story.

Agra rugs are very popular and distinct rugs and their history even more so. Mogul emperors respected and loved the Persian arts and culture and because they wanted to adopt, learn and replicate in their own country, Persian weavers ended up divulging their skills and craft to India. Agra carpets became popular and the elite of Indian weavings and are widely known by collectors as one of the most decorative items in the rug world.

In India, these artisans became masters of vegetable dyeing and by example here, you can see why. They are also known for extremely fine craftsmanship and extraordinary wool and with their amazing appeal, they will continue to be loved as amazing investments of art. We are proud to have found this lost treasure and we are extending it at an unbeatable value compared to brick and mortar stores which have ticket prices that are extraordinarily higher for very worthy antique rugs.
