Once it carried a nomad's world on horseback. Now it can hold your perfume atop your dresser or your keys atop your credenza. Or have it greet you, right on the floor.
This is an 1880s - early 1900s Persian Kurdish bag face, the decorative front panel of a khorjin, or saddlebag, woven by the Kurdish tribes of western Persia. These bags were among the most personal objects a nomadic family owned: slung over the back of a horse or mule, they carried provisions, textiles, and daily essentials across the landscape. The weavers lavished their finest work on the face panel, the part the world would see...and this one is the proof of it.
The Kurdish tribes of Persia have a weaving tradition as old as the mountains they inhabited. Working entirely from memory, with no cartoons or patterns, they produced bold geometric compositions using wool they raised, dyed, and spun themselves. Every symbol carries meaning; protection, fertility, the eye watching over the family and the animals. The palette is alive: saffron orange blazes against blue, terracotta, midnight blue, and vory. Bold. Graphic. Unapologetic. I love finding these and bringing them into the collection. They ought to be cherished.
The central field carries stacked diamond medallions filled with hooked geometric forms and tribal motifs that feel ancient because they are. The ivory border with its running floral vine is soft against the intensity of the field, a breath between the boldness. The edge guard features the fence of security motif. For protection.
Now separated from its pair, this bag face lives its second life as a standalone piece. It's adorable, compact, square, and full of soul. At 2x2 feet it is the ideal size for a credenza, a side table, a wall, a bathroom floor, a bedroom corner. Lay it flat, hang it up, or drape it somewhere beautiful.
100% wool throughout, full wool foundation and a soft, healthy pile that is genuinely a pleasure to touch. Vegetable dyed. Worn in with age-related wear consistent with its years. One of a kind… by definition.
