Heavy, saturated, and absolutely BOLD. This one commands some attention.
This is a vintage Persian Ardebil rug and it has a presence that is hard to put into words until you're standing in front of it. The ground is a deep charcoal-black that makes every motif on it pop with extraordinary intensity. The field is packed with bold tribal imagery: peacock figures, animal forms, stylized birds, geometric florals, all scattered across the dark ground in saturated berry red, lime-ish green, sky blue, tangerine, and burnt orange. It is rugged and decorative at once, the kind of rug that looks equally at home in a maximalist living room or a spare, minimal space that needs one strong thing on the floor.
Ardebil rugs from northwestern Iran are known for their bold graphic sensibility and their exceptional wool quality: dense, tightly knotted, and built to last. This one is heavy in hand, full-bodied, and weighted the way old hand-knotted wool gets when the pile is generous and the foundation is sound. The dyes are saturated and rich, the colors still vivid decades on.
In great condition for a mid-century vintage piece. Full pile, sound structure, ready to live on your floor for another fifty years.
