If you're seeking an oversize masterpiece with muted color ways, you've landed on a superstar. This circa 1920s rug comes from MASHHAD and it is definitely a finer rug that comes from one of the most beautiful cities in P E R S I A and also one of the holiest. It is a signed piece, and you'll notice the scripted signature cartouche woven on the top border of the rug, indicating a master weaver created this piece and most likely, it was a commission order for royalty.
MASHHAD is in the northeast province of KHORASSAN and has been a major producer of significant P E R S I A N rugs that are a bit more easy to recognize, as these rugs have an exceptional wool and weave and known to be of high quality with pronounced traits and a distinctive texture in their wool. This rug used to be deeper in color and at some point of its life, its dyes were lifted, resulting in these softer color ways. It is heavy duty and able to take on a lot of abuse with foot traffic and life.
It's grand and a palatial oversize gem with curvilinear design and beautiful movement of vine scrolls that give birth to paisleys (which represents "life"). Features abundant floral motifs both large and small. The art is filled with a flow and distinguishing characteristics. The ground color shows a "golden" tan field, with sensational dyes including a muted pistachio green, ice blue, french blue, pastel pink, chestnut brown, charcoal and more. The hand construction and material grade of the rugs from MASHHAD are known to be sturdier and longer lasting. This is a low pile, but hefty rug that is a definite heirloom and has generations to go.
A little more history of this piece. It was living in a Manhattan dining room in its last chapter of life. In good and clean condition. At phenomenal pricing for size, age and quality of rug. That last pic shows the rug full scale, shot indoor with low lighting to show you the variance of dyes in different settings. A rug of this caliber would be upwards of $40K in brick and mortar.
