Darn those pesky hallways because finding old rugs in the skinny is so hard, but you just nailed one. This tribal runner comes from the Caucasus mountains which is North of Persia and it was woven in the late 19th Century. It is very tribal. The runner has a wool pile, and is on wool foundation.
Let's explore the elements that we see on this antique runner as these antique floor coverings always have meaning and story. The diamonds in the field represent women. As you may know, women were the ones who sat on the loom to weave rugs. The edge guard that you see with the hook and scroll signifies water.
The jewel colors are bountiful, yet a bit mellow due to time/aging and of course the superior quality of natural dyes. Caucasian rugs are known to have colors that are contrasting. This is priced at a steal for an antique runner that will undoubtedly be a great decorative piece for the home or office. This old baby is low pile and worn, but in pretty good condition for its age!
