This antique Samarkand rug lends to what we consider to be of Chinese influence, but in actuality, Samarkand rugs are influenced by a variety of cultures. They serve as a reminder that weavers have been inspired by other regions and their art has been manifested through blending Chinese, European, Indian, Persian and Turkish weavings and aesthetics. This region was in the desert, along the legendary silk road. These rugs possess a distinct style of their own, coming from weavers that have been producing rugs for centuries.
This Samarkand rug is low pile, with wool on cotton foundation. You will see different shades of all the natural vegetable dyes throughout the rug. It has been professionally cleaned and ready for generations more of play.
Hand knotted circa 1920.
