Persian folks will say, “Come to our Sofreh.” Sofreh is a Farsi term referring to the tradition of celebrating important events, such as births, deaths, prayers, wishes, or even a baby losing one of their teeth or someone’s son passing an important exam with a table setting with all sorts of food. The Sofreh rug would be used to cover bread or as a table cloth.
This adorable antique 1880’s Sofreh Baluch rug was woven by the Baluchi tribe with all natural vegetable dyed wool. A flat weave technique was used on the central field in a light sienna color. The borders use a knotted weave technique and includes a ram’s horn motif that symbolizes power, heroism, fertility, and masculinity in navy blue, poppy orange, ivory, charcoal gray, and mauve-brown. The edges were produced with a flat weave Kilim technique and shows off exceptional craftsmanship.
Although this wonderful Sofreh Baluch rug can be used on the floor, it should not be used in a high traffic area. If you would like to showcase it differently, it can be used as a wall hanging or as some kind of table setting. There has been a loss of wool in some areas and will be shipped as is. We will send a pad on the house to keep it grounded.
