One of the best things about antique rugs is their exceptional quality. They were not manufactured in a factory with hundreds of other rugs that all look the same. Antique Persian rugs have been woven by hand by master weavers using designs that come from their heart and soul, which makes each and every rug a one-of-a-kind.
This beautiful antique 1920’s Persian Malayer scatter rug is a perfect example of this sentiment. Rarely seen in large sizes, antique Malayer rugs are almost always woven in small sizes. Woven typically by one female weaver, they are highly valued village rugs that are distinctly decorative with amazing drawings, art, and beauty in each piece.
Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool and a nice healthy pile…you can feel that old wool goodness the second you pinch this Persian.
The field features a bold and graphic take on the harshang design…that classic crab like motif that Malayer weavers loved to riff on. Here, it shows up in a chunky, angular form inside the central medallions…all coral and navy with little pops of ice blue. The harshang is an ancient design tied to protection, strength and a sense of movement and energy across the rug.
And yes…you may have totally spotted it. There’s a fish motif swimming in the field. Fish often pop up in Malayer and surrounding regions…symbols of abundance, good fortune and flow. It adds that playful village touch.
The borders pack in even more art…ram’s horn style hooks, abstract animals, and those quirky floral elements all dancing around the perimeter. It’s that perfect mix of geometry and whimsy that Malayer does so well.
There is one expertly done patch at the edge (pointed out in a photo)…clean, tight and blended in beautifully to keep the rug strong. Nothing distracting…just a sign of care and longevity.
Overall, it’s in really nice condition for its age…rich colors, great wool, folky motifs and a powerful little presence. A small but mighty Malayer.
And a custom cut pad will be shipped on the house to keep this little gem nice and snug.
