There’s something wonderful about the treasured and old rugs from the Caucasus mountains, specifically the Kazak rugs. These ancient tribal rugs were woven to be seen and with great contrast play that is unmistakable.
This 4’5 x 8’2 example hits with all the things we love to chase in old Kazaks: powerful geometry, punchy contrast, and a rustic, folky tribal spirit.
The grid of medallions lines up across the field like protective emblems, each one carrying an eight pointed star motif. Look closer and you’ll spot S-hook forms woven throughout for protection against the evil eye, along with ram’s horn symbolism representing strength and power.
This rug from nomadic weavers is playful and has great composition with medallion shifting slight in color combination. Handwoven circa 1900 by the weavers using vegetable dyed wool. It has a floppy handle and is low pile in very good condition. Stout where it counts, but relaxed under hand. Exactly the kind of vintage tribal rug that wakes a room right up with its old world spirit.
