This is a circa 1920 Persian Bidjar runner…aka the iron rug…and she earns that title. Woven in the village workshops of northwest Persia, Bidjars are famous for their dense, compact weave and serious weight. These rugs are "built" differently. Heavy in the hand. Structured. Almost armored. The kind of rug that doesn’t flinch in a high traffic hallway. Got dogs doing zoomies? No problem here.
The field is packed with rhythmic and beautifully outlined boteh paisleys marching end to end, grounded by deep inky blues and rich brick reds that shift with gorgeous abrash throughout. Those subtle dye variations are the heartbeat…little whispers of the weaver’s hand and the vegetable dyed wool doing its natural thing over time. Up close, the construction is tight and deliberate.
There has been a small corner repair (shown in pics) and she has wear mainly down on one end at the last ivory border with the floral chain art, and she wears it proudly. Nearly a century in and still ready to work.
