Two stacked hexagonal medallions anchor the field, creating a powerful vertical rhythm that pulls the eye straight down the rug. They sit on a glowing hot coral ground that has mellowed beautifully over time, while deep indigo corner spandrels bring contrast and depth to the composition.
Look closely and the rug begins to reveal its personality. Fish forms and small animal elements appear throughout the design, woven in among geometric symbols and tribal ornament. Handwoven in the first quarter of the 20th century with vegetable dyed wool, the colors remain lively even after decades of life. The pile is low from age and it is beautifully timeworn, yet the structure remains stout and durable.
