This is an incredible antique Turkish rug, hand knotted mid 19th Century! The warm color ways and grand design mesmerizes us all. This room size rug offers elegance and royal character, and breaths its age all the more so with the love worn areas. If you look at the borders, the artisans weaved some inscriptions that we believe is Kufic script, which is old Arabic calligraphy.
It has a very distinct style, packed with history within its coarsely woven wool pile. Only vegetable dyes were used to give color to this old rug. The village weavers may have taken a few years to produce this work of art, undoubtedly from the wool of their own sheep, using larger knots and leaving us with a room size rug that will be forever cherished. This outstanding 19th Century rug is simply a masterpiece. It will command attention in the space it lives in and add immense story to the abode!
Hand knotted with all natural, vegetable dyed wool circa 1940. Low pile. Wool on wool foundation.
