Some of the most desirable 19th Century tribal rugs are Serapi. They're outstanding in terms of spatial design, larger scale motifs and medallions, and you'll spot them on the floor in places like the white house or Gucci stores...not kidding! These old Persians have major appeal and impact and they work for various types of interiors with elements in their work that have great influence, flanked with geometric art that we get to cherish and enjoy.
This 1880s Serapi is on a deep watermelon ground color and the rug is loaded with abrash, sweeping across its entire being, showing off the remarkable vegetable dyed wool that was woven in small batches on the family level that it is derived from. The women of this region in the NW mountains of Persia are known to be master dyers and the color story that we see shows off their superb skills from the wide palette of hues that are the results of carefully brewed plants, vegetables, plants, roots, fruit, insects and minerals. These are practices no longer used and the labor of love that we admire, respect and cherish.
This fabulous Serapi has a great range of color, originality in design (they wove without sketches), and it truly breaths with artistic inspo! It has a very low pile with an awesome, floppy handle. Generally, rugs of this region are more coarsely woven with the fine Serapi wool. This is a definite beloved village rug with timeless style and composition, as each motif and medallion has a life of its own, independently constructed and set for us to love and wonder about.
Low pile with wear. Woven with vegetable dyed wool circa 1880. Extended at a steal and great value for connoisseur caliber art. Thank you for shopping small!
