A rare find!
This is a gorgeous antique Malayer with an all over floral design of shah abbas flowers. It is a village rug with a gracefully timeworn fade of a madder red backdrop; a fine Oriental rug that was hand knotted circa 1910. Most of these old rugs were only woven in small sizes so this is a very special treat and must have been a very special rug to have been woven and taken years and many weavers to produce.
Finely woven and known to have much originality and richness in design, this rug offers a great deal of history, class and style. The Malayer is a vegetal dyed wool rug (from plant, fruit, and vegetables) that was hand knotted and has 100 years of life. It is in excellent condition, especially considering its age. It is worn to perfection as they say. You can see the life it has had on this oversize rug and the old world wool as lived and seen a century of life and will surely have centuries more to go.
Like all of the most artistic village rugs, older antique Malayer carpets are excellent investments which are just now beginning to approach the full recognition they deserve. Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. Malayer and the surrounding villages produced some of the most ornate village weavings. At the finer levels, each Malayer Oriental carpet is distinct, the weavers having drawn on a large pool of designs, investing much originality in their creation.
