Deep plum, lavender and olive on a creamy ivory ground…this early 1900s Agra takes a beautiful departure from the red palettes so often associated with old world rugs. Warm apricot and camel run through the drawing, giving her a lovely balance of earthy warmth and softer purple tones.
Interconnected vines travel across the field, linking broad floral palmettes, little rosettes and curling leaves in a beautifully rhythmic allover design. The blossoms turn and open in different directions, while the branching stems keep everything connected. There is wonderful symmetry, softened by all those individual handwoven details.
A wide lavender border frames the ivory field, filled with alternating blossoms and winding olive and ochre vines. Slim floral bands pick up the plum and apricot, carrying the colors neatly around the edges. A woven inscription appears at one end, another intriguing detail held within her wool.
Her open ivory ground and generous palette make her wonderfully easy to style. Pull from the plum, bring in olive, lean into the lavender, or let warm woods and simple upholstery sit alongside her. The allover pattern gives you plenty of freedom with furniture placement, too.
Handwoven in vegetable dyed wool and in excellent condition, she has a healthy low pile with plenty of meat on the bone. A beautifully drawn old Agra with substance, warmth and a color story you don’t come across every day.
