This Persian Kerman from the 1930s carries a creamy ivory ground scattered with graceful floral sprays in French blue, rose pink and deeper raspberry, with soft green leaves and warm golden details. Soft to the touch and cloudy underfoot, she has a tightly woven construction and a generous wool pile across much of her surface.
Her beautiful broken border design gives the composition its flowing character. Instead of a straight frame enclosing the field, scalloped blue and pink ornament reaches inward, while flowers and curling leaves wander across its edges. The border and field seem to spill into one another, giving the rug movement and a wonderfully graceful outline.
Kerman’s weaving history stretches back centuries, with an extraordinary tradition of floral drawing. Growing European demand helped expand its carpet trade during the late 19th century, bringing these Persian weavings into more homes abroad. Here, that floral artistry unfolds in bouquets, delicate branching stems and an ornate central medallion, all balanced by lovely expanses of ivory.
Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool, she offers exceptional value for her age, workmanship and beauty.
