This highly desirable and soothing to look at palatial rug is a wonderful work of European weaving, weighing in at approximately 140 pounds, with supremely substantial vegetably dyed wool and a high, plush pile you’ll want to sink your bare feet into.
Dating to the first quarter of the 20th century, this European rug is believed to have been woven in Spain. She carries a beautifully soft palette, with a dusty blue field, framed by peachy salmon and apricot. Honey wheat, warm taupe and creamy ivory fill out the floral details.
Her botanical allover design brings together repeating floral medallions, slender winding vines and curling leaves. There is beautiful symmetry in the arrangement, with enough space between the motifs for the drawing to breathe. This old beauty feels calming, is expansive and serene. The branching stems give your eye a gentle path through the field, creating movement within that lovely sense of balance. A wide floral border carries the garden around the edges.
Her lustrous, vegetable dyed wool catches the light beautifully, giving the surface a shifting depth as you move around her. You'll notice in the photos the variations in depth of color and tone as she is richer blue from one direction, softer from another, with the warm peach and golden details coming forward in different moments.
