Experience this super old squarish piece from the BPR collection, a Persian Sultanabad Mahal rug with a whimsical design filled with palmette motifs that each represent their own unique personality and meandering blossom-laden vines to tie it all together. These gorgeous Persians are popular because they have a very distinct style of art and are highly valued in the market. Many of them were woven for the European marketplace with their soft and spacious design.
We appreciate the fact that there is no other rug like it because this is not a classic or traditional Persian style rug and the artistic vision and skills that brought it to life have an aesthetic that stands out on its own. Sultanabad rugs come from an ancient period and typically were woven under the direct supervision of the King's lead designers.
With super wide borders that display a wonderful array of palmette motifs enveloped by a dainty lattice pattern help us to date this low pile rug; it is from the 19th Century and it has seen a lot of life. We gave this old Persian a lot of care and love to rehab it. Many worn spots and areas that had some tears have been repaired and reinforced on the underside. Please see pics for full character and condition.
This is a village rug woven with inspiration from 16th or 17th Century rug patterns with larger scale design motifs that also include a lot of spaciousness; a supreme example of folk art weaving. It was handwoven with vegetable dyed wool that is coarse, heavy, and floppy in lovely soft earth tones. Being that this beauty is an ivory Sultanabad with beige, tan, and cream color ways, it is one of the rarest and most prized kinds of antique rugs to come across. Like a beautifully drawn tapestry that can be placed on the wall, the versatility of this amazing rug makes it a great piece to enhance a space with history, character, and style.
Low pile, worn, with restored areas. Not recommended for a major traffic area. Handwoven circa mid 19th Century with vegetable dyed wool.
