Presenting an incomparable gem in our exclusive Legacy Collection of world-class heritage rugs, this stunning 19th Century artwork was created in the rugged mountains of Heriz specifically in the village of Bakshayesh (Bakhshaish), where the earliest and most intricate carpets were woven. This Persian has all the trademarks of its rarified lineage, from the quality of the old world wool and composition to its scale and breathtaking beauty.
The broad palette of timeworn, synchronous dyes sits on a dusty Prussian blue ground and includes crimson, rust, coral, ivory, green, turquoise, sand, stone, navy, and royal and pastel blues. It features exquisite abrash, a subtle variation of color achieved by expert women artisans weaving using different batches of vegetable-dye-colored wool dyed in the same shade with minute differences in hue.
Patterned in oversized geometric medallions of leaves, vines, and flora, the composition is both organic and structured, creating an immersive feeling of controlled yet abundant natural bloom. Showcasing a generous spirit and style, it is one of the most distinct village rugs. Rug masters would have taken years of weaving to create the abundance of space between the all over art and complete each perfectly planned shape and feature. The virtuosity of the tribal artists is equally evident in the durable, hefty wool that has only improved in feel. The softness of aged vegetable dyes over the generations is mesmerizing at first look.
This masterwork P E R S I A N was woven in 1870’s or 1880’s to the outside wall of a mountain home using wool from the tribe’s own lovingly tended flock of sheep. The piece is an art lover’s and connoisseur’s delight, boasting a truly original pattern, color story and movement in a grand scale. It is not only a one of a kind, but a one in the world antique rug.
The carpet is intact and in good condition for its age. Carpets of such elevated quality and beauty are treasured by collectors yet rarely appear on a sales floor or at auction. Once acquired, they typically stay within a family for generations as cherished heirlooms and art pieces. The scarcity and historical and artistic value make such carpets virtually priceless when they do become available for purchase.
