Simply magnificent. A late nineteenth century Persian Sultanabad Mahal measuring 13’6” x 16’6”, woven for grand rooms and a statement-making presence. The jaw dropping field is a rolling water garden of palmettes, leafy vinery, and cloudlike blossoms that drift in a beautiful allover movement. Nothing feels static. The drawing is confident and expressive, the kind of grand art that made Sultanabad famous and distinct.
Framing it all is a rockstar border on a deep charcoal ground. Monumental palmettes and saz leaves pulse down the length, linked by a rhythmic vine scroll. Ivory guard bands brighten the composition and add a graceful cadence around the edge. The palette is born of vegetable dyed wool with that mellow, age earned glow collectors love. This is a rare and dreamy rug, an absolute masterpiece and heirloom.
Condition is wonderful for its age. Pile is low and even; the handle is beautifully floppy, and the foundation is sound. The scale and the allover design make styling easy. It reads luxurious without feeling loud (thanks to natural vegetable yes), and it anchors a space with quiet authority and soul.
This is world class art from the Sultanabad tradition, offered at a small business price. Thank you for your interest in Blue Parakeet Rugs!
