An enormous sea of blue, with little treasures scattered across it. This palatial antique Chinese Peking measures 13’6 x 19’, with a beautifully restrained palette and enough presence to transform an entire room.
A round medallion anchors the blue field, with a central floral rosette encircled by curling cloud-band motifs and an outer ring of blossoms and scrolling vines. The clouds give the center a soft, floating movement, beautifully suited to that enormous sea of blue.
The broad golden border adds another layer of movement, with curling vines, blossoms, and stylized butterflies framing the composition. Ivory, warm wheat, and touches of pale blue soften the ever beautiful, deeper blue ground.
The rug by nature is calming. Detailed up close, spacious when you step back. That balance gives it an almost minimalist feel, even with so much to discover within the weaving. Its simple color story makes it easy to build a room around, bringing warmth to wood, depth to pale upholstery, and a beautiful foundation for collected furniture and art. It looks and is old, from the 1930s.
Hand knotted with vegetable dyed wool, it has a soft, floppy handle and a beautiful sheen that catches the light across the pile. The subtle shifts in blue give that expansive field life…this old being is large and inviting.
I brought this beauty out of a home in New Jersey and gave it a little love where needed. A smaller, battered-and-bruised antique Chinese rug in the BPR collection turned out to be a wonderful match for the blue field, supplying the material for a couple of small patches. A little of one old rug now lives on in another.
Professionally cleaned, with those repairs complete, this beauty is ready for its next home. It has some age-related wear, including lower pile and areas of exposed foundation, particularly in the borders. Please see all photos for the patch repairs, condition details, and full character.
Big, beautiful, and floor ready.
