16’7 x 33’10 Antique Indian Agra LEGACY RUG

It is no wonder that this majestic antique oversized Indian Agra rug, with its nature-inspired floral design and vivid colors, would capture the attention of everyone that encounters it. This is one of BPR’s Legacy Rugs, and we have only a few in the collection. These are significant time pieces and grand rugs that are in a class of their own.

The alluring and highly distinct blush-rouge ground of this late 19th Century palace size rug in the center of the rug pops against exquisite flower motifs in cantaloupe melon-orange, marigold yellow, and ivory with leaves and vines in a deep sage green and a light pistachio dancing around the colorful blooms. This beautiful beast is full pile wool, loaded with luxury, weight and superior quality and practices of weaving and dying of old world wool that no longer exist. Years and multiple weavers were on this palatial treasure and it has remained in mint-y condition, preserved throughout time and for us to cherish.

Framing the center are three intricate and finely woven border bands, each with their own personalities. Tulips in rouge and cantaloupe surrounded in ivory provide a nice contrast to the vividness of the expansive and alluring field. The ornamental central border in cantaloupe with floral and vine motifs in rouge, ivory, light pistachio, sage green, and splashes of marigold yellow complement the overall tone of the rug with great harmony. Flowers and vines set against a marigold yellow adorn the outer border. This warm color palette can open up a room and make it more inviting. The creation of these luxurious colors come from the practice of dying the wool with all natural dyes, such as vegetables, roots, and flowers.

Home to the Taj Mahal, the city of Agra is located on the banks of the Yamuna River just south of New Delhi in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Emperor Akbar of the Mughal dynasty was a great patron of the arts and imported highly-skilled Persian weavers to establish a rug weaving tradition inspired by Persian design patterns.  Persian weavers gifted their skills and craft to India. Agra carpets became popular and the elite of Indian weavings and are widely known by collectors as one of the most decorative items in the rug world.

With its lush full-bodied pile of hand-woven pure, vegetable wool, this lavish and substantial rug will last for generations to come and provide an amazing investment in floor art. At one time this rug was larger and was professionally reduced to the size it is now. This speaks to just how palatial and grand this exquisite rug really is. In magnificent condition, this gorgeous rug will elevate any space it inhabits.

Due to the weight of the rug (approximately 600 pounds), it will travel to you on freight truck delivery to the desired location after purchase.
