Ok, feast your eyes on this one. This 1920s Persian Mahal on an ivory ground is a masterpiece and I mean that. 9’ x 12’10 of wandering branches, incredible blues, and a design that just…moves.
And that ivory ground, in the Mahal world, this is something to get excited about. You don’t see it often. It opens everything up and makes those blues absolutely sing. Look at those exceptional vegetable dyed blues that have only gotten better with a hundred years of age. That’s what natural dye does, it doesn’t fade out, it mellows in.
Here’s my favorite part though. The weaver left their mark in two spots near the border. Little departures, little signatures. A hello from 1920. I find that so moving, for someone sat at a loom a hundred years ago and said I was here. That’s the magic of these rugs.
Mahals are also just genuinely great interior rugs. Designers love them because they work with so much. The loose, organic design doesn’t fight anything. It plays beautifully with layered, collected spaces and holds its own in a more minimal room too. Low pile, vegetable dyed, good condition.
Check out the video for this amazing Persian.
