2x4 Worn Camel Ground 19th Century Tribal Scatter Rug #3671

Regular price $1,260.00

From the region of Caucasus (North of Persia), this mini antique scatter rug is layered with character, symbolism and charm. Two bold geometric medallions sit one above the other on a warm camel-colored ground, surrounded by tiny rosettes, hooked forms, animals and talismanic motifs. Every inch seems to hold another small discovery.

The palette is earthy and beautifully aged, with old madder reds, deep indigo, soft ivory, brown and touches of faded blue-green. The vegetable dyes have mellowed over generations, and the wear has softened the whole design and given it its age old personality and character.

Multiple borders frame the field, ending with the fence of security design along the outermost edge. This protective motif creates a symbolic boundary around everything held within the rug. It is one more reminder that these old tribal pieces were woven with meaning, not merely decoration.

This little charmer has seen life and needs a lower traffic area to live in. It's low pile, battered and bruised. It's remarkably soft and supple. It folds almost like a handkerchief. Ancient, soulful and wonderfully imperfect, this is a true little piece of woven history. This old, nomadic rug will ship with a custom cut rug pad on the house to keep it nice n snug.

Hand knotted with vegetable dyed wool. From the 19th Century.
