This 1930s Persian Gharajeh / Karaja scatter rug is worn, subdued and wonderfully wonky. Its geometric medallion and surrounding angular motifs move through softened shades of moss and olive green, earthy rust-brown, tealblue-gray and warm ivory and camel. Depending on the direction of the light, the colors can read deeper and moodier or lighter and more washed out, so this little rug can shift in tone, depending on where it’s set and styled.
This worn Persian scatter rug has undergone a compound wash, a process that stripped back much of the original strength of the natural dyes and gave it this a more muted appearance.
Its weave is not straight or mechanically perfect. The borders wander, the lines ripple a bit in the middle of the rug, and the shape has a gentle wave to it, all evidence of its old, handmade nature. Changes in loom tension and the hand of the weaver created those irregularities nearly a century ago, and today they are a visible part of its personality.
With a size of 2’10” x 4’, it is an easy scatter size for a lot of different spaces and while it is worn, it still can be styled in a busy area. Small in scale, earthy in color and full of old-rug character. Will ship with a pad on the house to keep this little gem nice and snug.
