There is something kinda magical about owning something that is very unique and a one-of-a-kind. This fantastic antique 1880s Shirvan rug from the Caucasus Mountains definitely fits the bill to a t. Within the main field, the central medallion is slightly off center with the corner motifs differing in size from one end to the other, highlighting the very nature of a handwoven textile. Take a closer look and you will see an abrash effect, which is when the weaver finishes with one batch of vegetable dyed wool and shifts to another, changing the tone of the color or even the hue. This beautiful rug will now be unmistakable against any other rug due to these details.
Lovely 8-pointed star motifs can be seen throughout the main field against a mostly navy blue ground, symbolizing happiness and fertility. Along with thin candy cane stripped border bands, floral motifs decorate the lateral border band immortalizing the beauty of nature that surrounded the weaver. Even the raw fringe is a delight, with its alternating between colors in an unexpected way. Although this is a love worn rug with scattered wear and reduced ends, it is stout and sturdy. This beauty is still up for handling daily life.
With all the history this amazing rug has lived through, it will surely bring a strong presence to any space it calls home. Place it in a bathroom, kitchen, or an entryway and watch how much character, style, and beauty it brings with it.
