Royal purple and a little bird holding court. This 1920s Chinese Art Deco rug measures 3' x 5'9", with a wonderfully bold palette and a flowering branch that travels across the field like a painting.
Deep blue limbs bend and fork into delicate stems, carrying blossoms in hot pink, coral, tangerine, golden yellow, ivory, and shades of blue. Little green leaves peek between them, while that glorious purple gives every color room to shine.
And then there’s the perched bird, oh so cute! A tiny personality among the flowers, with green and blue plumage, warm orange accents, and a pale tail extending behind it. A sweet detail to discover within such a dramatic piece.
The composition has beautiful movement. The branch sweeps diagonally through the open field, drawing your eye from blossom to blossom, with plenty of purple space between. A fine ivory line frames the scene, but flowers and decorative motifs play across it, giving the design a lively, wonderfully free feeling. Along the edges, floral vessels and ribbon-like flourishes add even more little discoveries.
The wool catches the light beautifully, shifting from luminous violet to deeper plum as you move around it. This rug is a substantially heavy piece for its size with quality you will feel. Highly durable and feels like velvet. It has very dense and great old world wool woven here. There are visible little marks of light scattered wear, and small spots of white knot heads that are hallmarks of antique Chinese beauties.
