This runner is full of wool and wonder…a tribal Persian from around 1900, woven with raw, undyed camel hair in the borders and deeply saturated vegetable-dyed wool throughout. It has that fluffy handle you feel underfoot, yet carries the strength and weight these old village rugs are known for.
The design is unapologetically tribal, powerful, geometric, and not at all perfect. That’s the beauty. The medallions in the field if you look closely drift slightly off-center, the shapes aren’t symmetrical, and the motifs don’t follow exact repetition. Instead, they carry meaning: woven symbols of protection, fertility, and everyday life in the weaver’s world. Each imperfection makes it more personal, more alive, more raw and real.
Those curious symbols, like the angular shapes that look like hashtags or pound signs, are actually abstracted tribal motifs. They’re thought to represent strength, connection, or sometimes stylized weavings of amulets to keep away the evil eye. What seems like a “#” to us today was once a protective symbol meant to keep the family safe.
This is what makes it art: strong wool, glowing camel borders, powerful color play, and the human touch of a weaver leaving her story in every knot. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool.
