This wild and rare 19th-century antique Persian piece sings an entire song. It is an impossible-to-reproduce work of textile art, boasting a wild, joyful color story that instantly steals the show (and its future room). Woven on an exceptionally rare yellow ground and paired with vibrant aqua blue, the contrast is nothing short of magnetic. Va-va-voom!
Subtle shifts in dye batch, known as abrash, are seen through the field, leaving visible traces of the weaver’s hands and the passage of time. At its core, there are three poled medallions that anchor the design, overflowing with whimsical tribal symbolism. If you look a bit closer at it, you’ll spot peacocks in this rug, playful animal motifs, and even the stylized figure of a woman with her hands on her hips, a motif traditionally representing fertility, strength, and protection.
Measuring approximately 4' x 7', this piece carries true earned wear and a deeply aged patina that only a century of life can bestow. It is worn and features one small hole (check the photos for full character and condition), but for those who collect soul, rarity, and folk art, this is an absolute treasure. Low pile and woven with vegetable dyed wool, by a woman of the Bakhtiari tribe over 100 years ago.
