5x7 Antique Bergama Rug #3194

Regular price $1,950.00

Taking it back to the 19th Century with this wonderful Anatolian Turkish Bergama, a great size that is less often found in old rugs and it has old world charm all over it. This antique rug is worn and has a beautiful, floppy feel, woven by nomadic people. Some call these the Transylvania rugs as there were discovered to be in many of the churches there in Romania and on a personal note, I did take to these rugs upon travels there in 2022 and noticed them hanged on display. I learned that these rugs and other Turkish rugs were gifted to them. Many of these rugs are housed in these churches as well as museums.

With warm color ways and oxidized vegetable dyes, it will surely ground your space with it's soul and tribal influence. This rug has two different weaving techniques taken to it, knotted in the field with a looser weave and the rug is 100% wool (pile, weft and warp) which gives it it's floppy nature and the ends are flat weave (pile-less) Kilim edges. Two different weaving techniques in one rug that truly speaks ancient and helps us also identify this particular gem.

The region that this rug was woven was one of the most powerful in Anatolia, Turkey. Their weaving traditions date as far back as the 11th century, they say. It's also been known that Marco Polo made them stand out because upon his travels in the 13th Century, he took to them and these particular rugs were quite in demand during the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance as well as in Europe. These are prized rugs that are collected. The rustic vibes on this one definitely take the stage and it is filled with powerful symbolism including the 8 pointed star of wisdom.

This rug is worn, low pile, worn, woven with vegetable dyed wool. Please see pics for full character and condition.
