This late 19th Century rug in the BPR collection definitely stands out from the crowd. From the rugged mountains of NW Persia, this tribal rug is a Serapi, woven from amazing wool with phenomenal geometric art. Serapi rugs are distinct from the Heriz region with a particular style, with finer knotting and more large-scale, spaciously placed art than other rugs from this area.
We are in love with the antique ivory borders that frame this rug and the elements you see within the border are turtles! This beauty is low pile, with scattered wear and has a lovely, floppy handle. The patina is sensational and the dyes are all natural, vegetable dyes. You may have been looking for one of these rugs for a while as they are quite popular antique rugs (the White House loves them!).
