This antique Afgani Ersari with about 140 years of great age sits on an exquisite and deep wine colored ground with coral and phenomenal streaks of blue. You can see and sense the lanolin oil that’s trapped in the sheep’s wool that offers such a wonderful sheen to it.
This tribal rug is low pile, soft to the touch and offers symmetry, balance and is a definite mood! This old piece was woven with two different weaving techniques; the ends are kilim flat weave and the field is knotted.
The wool was dyed using natural dyes, such as vegetables, flowers, and roots, giving it such a great display of colors that resonates deeply with the soul. One small area was rewoven at one point of time as you can see because of the different wool used to restore (old and original wool vs newer wool). Low pile and with scattered wear.
Woven circa 1880 with vegetable dyed wool.
