Since the notable period of Mughal/Mogul Empire, one prominent area for stellar woven rugs is Agra, India and weaving goes back to circa 1500. Agra is also of course known for the Taj Mahal! This lovely rug, from circa 1900 with an all over design and gorgeous teal ground, speaks for itself. These hand woven works of art are known for their amazing palette of color.
Mogul emperors respected and loved the Persian arts and culture and because they wanted to adopt, learn and replicate in their own country, Persian weavers ended up divulging their skills and craft to India. Agra carpets became popular and the elite of Indian weavings and are widely known by collectors as one of the most decorative items in the rug world.
In India, these artisans became masters of vegetable dyeing and thus, they developed what you see here...a color ground that we rarely see...TEAL! They are also known for extremely fine craftsmanship and extraordinary wool and with their amazing appeal, they will continue to be loved as amazing investments of art. This particular Agra has an all paisleys throughout the field and has character earned through time that you can see in the field of the rug...the scattered wear. They say that paisleys are symbolic for "seeds of life" or "fertility". We love old rugs! They always tell a story. This antique Agra is low pile and ready for another century of use.
