One of the amazing things about old Persian rugs is the fact that there is not another one out there exactly like it, making it a true treasure. This eye catching antique Heriz Serapi rug is a great example of the highly inventive and evolving reinterpretation of certain design motifs found in Persian rugs.
Handwoven in the late 19th century, this fantastic rug has a very abstract interpretation of the dragon motif. Dragon motifs are known to symbolize its dominion over air and water, guardian of treasures and secret objects, but most importantly its connection to the production of fertile rains of spring. All themes geared towards abundance and the continuity of life.
In this case, the midnight blue rows of abstract shapes are the dragon motifs, like clouds hovering over a parched landscape, drawing the eye toward them. The geometric botanical themed motifs in lovely colors, such as rust, cornflower blue, ivory, and sage green blend perfectly with the extremely exquisite peach coral ground that has a gradient of various shades throughout the rug. The midnight blue and sometimes charcoal gray ground of the main border band adds just the right finishing touch to tie it all together. With such a distinct art design, we have never had anything like it in our collection.
The wool used to weave this fabulous rug was dyed using natural resources, such as vegetables, plants, and flowers. This beauty is love worn and recently returned from Rug Rehab (with our pro for repair and TLC) and we had a patch (see pic) implemented in one of threadbare to reinforce and give this old baby strength and a lot more time. It does have one other minor repair from another chapter of its life (see pic). This wonderful rug has a warm spirit and will bestow charm, beauty, and style in any space it calls home.
Low pile, woven with vegetable dyed wool.
It is not recommended to have this Persian styled in a room with lots of heavy traffic.
