Here's a beautifully timeworn late 19th Century Serapi P E R S I A N, woven with old world wool from the region that lies on the edge of the Caspian Sea. Talk about MOOD, this tribal rug has a powerful, rectilinear design and a striking color story. What's more? It's square! The shape is hard to come by.
There are quite a few mystical things about this rugged rug, actually. It was woven in the NW mountains and has a phenomenal and rarely seen dark camel border. The same, natural dark camel in on the panel of this P E R S I A N, embracing the eye catching coral central medallion. The corner spandrels display sensational shades of blue (pewter blue, sailor blue and and steel blue). The border has geometric turtle elements and the main panel on the rug is surrounded by what we suspect to be the angular mountains depicted in ivory, which in the slightest way has created such a beautiful contrast in the field of the rug.
Please note: One end of this rug has a not so straight edge. This rug is old and handwoven, so by nature, this is it's natural character. Also, from what we see, this rug was just slightly longer and was professionally reduced. Please see pics of the left, bottom corner where we show it in pics.
Woven with all natural vegetable dyes, circa 1880. Presented at amazing value for age, history and caliber P E R S I A N.
