There is something incredibly calming about an old ivory ground Mahal, and they're far less common than their red ground counterparts. Woven around 1920, this village Mahal has softened beautifully over more than a century, with warm ivory tones and vegetable dyed colors that have mellowed into the most inviting palette.
The field is filled with a wonderfully small-scale Herati design, giving the rug beautiful movement without ever feeling busy. Rust, faded coral, soft denim blue, and muted teal quietly weave their way across the ivory ground, while the rich rust border frames everything wonderfully. Keep an eye out for the little turtle motifs tucked throughout the border, a whimsical detail that adds so much charm.
This rug drapes with ease, a telltale sign of an older, supple weave that has been beautifully broken in over generations. It feels luxurious under hand and settles effortlessly into a room. The colors also have a little magic to them. Depending on how the light catches the wool, the palette shifts to the naked eye, sometimes reading warmer and creamier, other times cooler with the blues and faded terracotta stepping forward. A piece that brings history, warmth, and an easy elegance to just about any home.
