If you appreciate a rug with a rich story and undeniable presence, this 1920s Persian Mahal is one for the books. Measuring approximately 9x12, it features a graceful, open all-over floral design framed by a striking dark navy blue border. This rug has a lot of beauty, pop and personality. It would be such a great addition to a living room that needs a great transformation, a bedroom where you rise in the mornings and feel the wonderful wool beneath your feet and wake up your senses either the wonderful natural dye colors, or a wonderful nursery or kid’s room where it would be so playful and fun.
The ground color is really remarkable, an exquisite, hard-to-pinpoint hue that sits right in the sweet spot between a saturated, dark salmon and coral rose, and there are pics with objects in a photo to help illustrate better.
Woven with wonderfully soft, supple wool, it remains in exceptionally nice condition with low, and an even pile with only very minimal wear, which is remarkably rare for a room-size piece of this age.
What makes this Mahal truly even more fabulous, though, is its extraordinary backstory.
I found this rug through an older couple who were parting with it after moving from Northern California to Southern California. It had been in their family for generations, but in their new home, there simply wasn’t a room where it fit anymore.
So I drove a couple of hours down to Oceanside, near San Diego, to meet them, see the rug and hear its story.
The rug once lived in her grandmother’s home in Germany, in a town near Hannover. She grew up with this rug, seeing it every summer when she visited her grandmother.
Her grandmother had inherited it in a pretty remarkable way. She worked as a housekeeper for a wealthy woman, and when the woman passed away, she left this antique Persian rug to her. When her grandmother later died, the rug went to her son, and when he passed, it came to the woman (the daughter) I was now standing with.
Rugs…carry us through time.
And somehow, after all those generations, all those homes, Germany to California and nearly a century of life, this room size Persian Mahal is still in superb condition.
