Alright…this one’s got presence. An early 1900s Persian Heriz out of the NW mountains of Persia, coming in at a rare 6'7 x 7'7 square…which, if you know, you know. Squares like this don’t just show up, they anchor a room in a completely different way and they simply don’t come around often enough. No long pull in one direction…just a grounded, centered moment that holds everything together.
The main field is packed with angular, tribal art…not shy, not muted…but alive. Check out the photo with the red and pink objects in it to help show what it’s doing and to help illustrate colors on the rug better.
All over NW Persian art, it has geometric motifs and edginess with some classic Heriz language. Strong and rugged. You feel the mountain roots in it. Low pile, stout, built to last and handwoven with vegetable dyed wool, doing its thing with subtle variation throughout. And then that midnight blue border…loaded with turtle motifs, wrapping the whole piece with contrast that hits just right. It’s a workhorse with personality…structured, grounded, and quietly wild at the same time. Be sure to check out the video clip below for a little more illustration of this piece.
