This little 1920s Caucasian weaving has a fantastic composition. The contrast is what grabs you first…deep indigo blues against warm ivory, earthy browns, soft denim blues, and rich brick reds, all created from vegetable dyes that have mellowed beautifully over the last century.
And then there is the abrash. The blues shift. The ivories move. Colors drift subtly from one shade to another as the weaver worked through different batches of hand dyed wool. It is one of those details that instantly reminds you this was made by a person, not a machine.
Woven by village weavers in the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas, rugs like this were expressions of daily life, tradition, and tribal identity. The slightly wandering lines and gentle curves throughout the design are exactly what many of us love about old village weaving. Nothing feels rigid or manufactured. The hand of the maker is present everywhere.
The field is packed with geometric tribal motifs connected by an energetic lattice-like design. It feels balanced, graphic, and remarkably modern despite being over a century old. The wool pile sits a little lower today, but there is still plenty of substance under hand. The surface remains soft and inviting, and this is a wonderful example of an old rug that has been enjoyed without losing its presence.
Whether layered into a collected interior, paired with antiques, or used to bring warmth and character into a newer home, this little Caucasian weaving delivers exactly what so many people search for in old rugs…authenticity, movement, color, and soul.
