Check out this antique Cloud Band Kazak that is the kind of rug collectors chase down and brag about later. Woven by nomadic tribes in the Caucasus mountains in the late 19th century, it’s got all the punchy, graphic power you’d expect from a piece with serious street cred. The main field is dominated by two and a half bold medallions in ocean blue, packed with swirling red and ivory cloud bands, those funky, curlicued shapes that are tied to dragons from ancient Asian mythology. They’re meant to represent the smoke vapors that swirl around a dragon in flight.
Add in tribal elements like ram’s horns (a nod to strength) and borders with eight-pointed stars (hello, happiness and fertility) and a fence motif for security, and you’ve got layers of meaning wrapped up in wool. This piece has a 100% low wool pile and foundation, and a soft, floppy handle that shows off its nomadic roots.
Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool, the colors have oxidized beautifully, giving the rug a rich, aged look without losing contrast. It’s worn in just the right way, enough to prove it’s been around, but still holding strong. Rare to find and hard to forget, this beauty is a real treasure.
