Woven in the Caucasus Mountains around 1890, this old Kazak has also lived a full life, and it carries the fingerprints of the people who wove it. Unlike manufactured rugs designed to achieve perfect symmetry, village woven Caucasian rugs often move and shift as they were created. Lines wander. Borders drift. Shapes expand and contract. The result is a piece with rhythm, personality, and life.
The field is filled with tribal crab motifs, surrounded by earthy vegetable dyed colors that have mellowed beautifully over more than a century. Rich brick reds, faded blues, warm ivory, chocolate browns, and soft aqua blue accents create a palette that feels grounded and natural. The not so subtle curves throughout are part of the charm. They remind you that this rug came from hands, not machines.
The wool pile is worn low with areas of exposed foundation that reveal the framework beneath the design. The wear is earned through generations of use. It is the kind of character people spend years searching for and manufacturers spend fortunes trying unsuccessfully to imitate, but nothing can replicate a raw and real antique rug. It's just vegetable dyed wool and woven by a woman an era ago.
There is a wonderful shabby chic quality here. Rustic. Collected. Soulful. The sort of rug that can instantly ground a brand new build, soften modern architecture, or add warmth to a room that feels a little too perfect.
For those who appreciate old rugs that show their journey, this one wears its history beautifully. A custom cut rug pad will be sent on the house to keep this old beauty protected and in place.
