This early 1900s Persian Bidjar has the weight, caliber, and solid construction they're famed for. After tying each row of knots, Bidjar weavers dampened the weft threads and pounded them tightly into the loom with a heavy comb. As the wefts dried, they contracted, creating an exceptionally dense foundation. That is why Bidjars earned the nickname “the iron rugs of Persia.”
The field is arranged in horizontal bands filled with hooked medallions, serrated leaves, diamonds, and strongly angular floral forms. The stepped geometry has an almost Aztec-like visual rhythm, although the design is entirely Persian.
Vegetable-dyed wool gives us mellowed brick red, coral, midnight blue, sky blue, forest green, golden camel, and ivory. The pile has worn beautifully with age, softening the colors and allowing parts of the construction to show.
Its width varies from 4’3” to 4’9” across the rug, while the length measures 8’2”. It is handmade, wonderfully imperfect, and not trying to be a factory-cut rectangle.
Nicely aged, full of character, and still stout, solid, and satisfyingly weighty underfoot. This rug definitely stands out from the crowd, showcasing a design that is definitely different.
