This antique Persian Heriz rug, woven in the early 20th century, is basically Autumn in rug form. The terracotta and burnt sienna ground is full of abrash, those beautiful color shifts that only come with the changing of wool batches during the dying process, giving it that “worn leather armchair” kind of soul. The main field explodes with angular floral sprays, vines that shoot out like they’ve got places to be, and stylized palmettes doing their own bold thing. It’s like the garden of strength deciding to go geometric.
At the center, a perfectly balanced medallion pulls everything together, flanked by motifs in pistachio, walnut, aqua blue, baby blue, and chalky blush, basically a faded fall sunset. The border band with a midnight blue ground has serrated leaf motifs lining the edge like ancient sentries. And the whole structure has that classic Heriz backbone: bold, tribal, and unshakably grounded.
Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool, it’s sturdy enough for real life with the kiddos and pets. A little scattered wear here and there, but like a good vintage jacket, it just adds character. This rug’s been around, and it knows how to hold a room together and bring that fruitful spirit of Autumn with its color story.
