This 1920s Persian Angeles Malayer is a wonderful example of why these village rugs have such a loyal following. On this small scale designed field, each boteh is slightly different from its neighbor, a reminder that every knot was tied by hand rather than following a rigid factory pattern. It has a deep navy ground with warm rusty-red, faded teal, ivory, sage green, and soft golden accents across the field, while the stepped border with blue frames everything beautifully.
One of my favorite details is the collection of tiny tribal animal elements woven into the surrounding field and corners. Look closely and you’ll discover little birds and four-legged creatures tucked between the geometric motifs. It’s a playful signature often found in older village weavings. These weren’t woven by accident. They reflect the daily life and imagination of the weaver and give the rug far more personality than a formal city carpet.
It has a healthy low pile of vegetable dyed wool that feels compact under hand while remaining durable enough for everyday living and the busy life. This is one of those rugs that will work almost anywhere. Overall, it’s in very good condition with the kind of age and patina that simply can’t be replicated today.
