An outstanding antique Persian Mahal in the BPR collection, measuring an impressive 10'1 x 16'5, this is a true palace-size rug woven in the late 19th to early 20th century. The midnight indigo ground is densely packed with a fine allover Herati (water garden) design, small stylized fish and blossoms interlocking in rhythmic repetition. The art makes this beauty a cinch to style. The field is bordered by a fiery rust frame that bursts with grand floral palmettes and bold scrolling vines, creating both contrast and balance.
This rug is the definition of art at scale, finely knotted with vegetable dyed wool, its colors have aged beautifully, now carrying a lovely patina with deep and rich blues, teal, brick-rust-red, warm ivory, espresso brown, and accents of mellowed yellow, walnut, coral, pink, olive green and pink. The scale of the motifs in the border gives a dramatic presence, while the precision of the field demonstrates the hand and discipline of expert village weavers.
Heavy duty, durable, and still supple underfoot, this is a masterpiece meant to anchor a large and important space. In low pile and excellent condition.
