This shabby chic Persian scatter rug, dating to around 1900, is love worn. Its rows of paisleys (symbolic for seeds of life) move across a deep navy ground in mellowed brick red, dusty coral, soft pistachio green, blue, and ivory, all brought together through naturally vegetable-dyed wool.
The really fun part is the inverse relationship of color between the rug’s two halves. As the design moves along, the background and motif shades seem to swap dominance. The navy ground becomes lighter and more faded while the paisleys shift with it, creating a wonderfully unexpected change across the field. It may come from different dye batches, the hand of the weaver, generations of wear, or, most likely, a little of everything.
The wool pile is low with scattered areas of heavier wear, giving it plenty of age and soul. It is relaxed, old, a little quirky, and ready to make a room more interesting.
