This antique Shiraz rug, crafted in the 1920s in the south of Persia is a tapestry of nomadic character. Handwoven entirely from vegetable dyed wool, it carries a raw and earthy feel that’s hard to miss. The design centers around a strong, large medallion enclosing a smaller diamond medallion, surrounded by four bursts of floral geometric corner motifs in the spandrels. Tribal elements weave through the entire field, while the border bands rotate between different color schemes and patterns, tying the whole composition together.
Its aged palette is rich and grounded. Just think oxidized brick-rust, dusty inky blue, terracotta, antique ivory, deep hunter green, yellowish-tan, espresso brown, and a faint blush drifting through. The colors have softened beautifully over time, giving it that laid-back, weathered look only decades can deliver.
With an extremely floppy handle and a 100% raw wool foundation and pile, this rug shows its age in the best way, worn with scattered wear, a low pile, and still filled with so much life. It’s a powerful nomadic piece that brings the wild spirit of the tribes of southern Persia right to the floor. Please see pics for full character and condition.
