If you're drawn to old village rugs with plenty of character, this Persian runner has it in spades. Woven during the first quarter of the 20th century, it isn't perfectly straight, and the width gently wanders from one end to the other, something that happened naturally as the weaver adjusted the tension on the loom over time. Those little shifts are part of what make village rugs feel so alive.
The espresso brown field is almost black at first glance, giving the entire runner a moody backdrop for the repeating geometric motifs showcased down the length of the rug, framed by the fence of security motif (symbolic for protection). The movement isn't loud. It's subtle. The slight irregularities in the weaving, the changing spacing between motifs, and the gentle waviness are a part of its story.
The palette is beautifully earthy with mellow vegetable dyes. Everything has settled together over the last hundred years into those muddy, lived-in colors that only age can create.
The wool pile is low from a long life, with scattered wear. It's an old village runner with soul, movement, and all the little handwoven quirks that remind you a woman, not a machine, sat at a loom and made it knot by knot. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool. It has a heavy handle and is wonderful.
