Handwoven in the late 19th century from vegetable-dyed wool, this antique tribal prayer rug has lived a long and remarkable life. Its field is filled with tribal symbols, protective S-hook motifs winding through the border, and a beautiful geometric mihrab, the prayer niche that gives these rugs their distinctive form.
One of my favorite details is found at the upper end, where stylized hand motifs flank the mihrab. They symbolize the devotee placing their hands beside the prayer niche while kneeling in prayer, before lowering their head to the rug in devotion. It's a deeply personal design that reminds us these rugs were woven for daily life, not simply decoration.
After well over a century, this old beauty is wonderfully battered and bruised. It has seen numerous things, earned its wear, and likely traveled alongside its owner through many seasons of life. Every patch and repair adds another chapter to its story.
If you're searching for perfection, this isn't it. If you're searching for authentic tribal art with tremendous soul, history, and character, this late 19th century prayer rug delivers all of it in spades.
