An antique Turkish flat weave kilim from the 1920s, dressed in an all-over field of eight-pointed stars, each one a tiny cosmos, endlessly repeating across a ground of deep burgundy and aged ivory. Woven in wool with a richness of saturated, yet nicely aged color: dusty French blue, warm taupe, mauve, warm tan and ivory, . The border with smaller geometric figures, symbolic shorthand only tribal weavers knew.
One of the most important motifs here ,the eight-pointed star, known in Turkish and Anatolian weaving tradition as the sekizgen yıldız. It's one of the most ancient and universally meaningful symbols woven into textile history. Its eight points radiate in all directions: up, down, left, right, and the four diagonal corners in between, and many say it represents the fullness of the cosmos, wholeness, and protection from all directions. This star has been woven into kilims for centuries as both a spiritual shield and a declaration of beauty. When repeated in an all-over field pattern, the effect is mesmerizing and deeply intentional: a woven prayer, a protective mantle, a field of light.
Now about the weave, unlike hand-knotted pile rugs, where individual knots of wool are tied to a foundation to create a plush, raised surface...this one is a flat weave (or kilim) is created entirely through the weaving process itself, interlacing warp and weft threads without any knots at all. The result is a textile that is reversible, lighter in weight, and low profile. Flat weaves are celebrated for their graphic clarity: because there is no pile to soften the edges, the geometric patterns appear crisp, direct, and architecturally bold. Btw, this flat weave is strong enough to be layered, if you wish to do so. Handwoven with vegetable dyed wool.
